WhatsApp Codec Prototyped in Julia: Have you noticed recent improvements in audio and visual quality when using WhatsApp? Julia may be part of the reason why. In a new presentation, Revamping Audio Quality for Real-Time Calling, Meta engineers Sriram Srinivasan, Jatin Kumar and Bikash Agarwalla describe how they used Julia for prototyping to improve WhatsApp audio and video call quality. Jatin Kumar explains, ‘Think of Julia as a powerful combination of MATLAB and Python, with an amazing collection of DSP libraries. It allows writing expressive code through first-class support for vector operations.’ The use of Julia is described in this video starting at 8 minutes, 15 seconds. Results and rollout are described at the end of the video.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Uses Julia to Fast-Track Hydrogen Supply Chain Infrastructure Deployment: According to Mark Chung, group manager for Infrastructure and Energy Storage Analysis at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), “We recently made several upgrades to [the Scenario Evaluation and Regionalization Analysis model], including translating the tool into the Julia programming language which has drastically increased the model’s computational efficiency, whether run on a desktop or on NREL’s high-performance computer.”
